For this trio of birdhouses in a little garden scene, I wanted to capture something that I try to create in my own backyard. I’m not always successful, but I really like the idea of creating a little haven where you can go and just enjoy nature.

I wanted to paint this in a whimsical style and use colors that really represent a garden and nature—bright, energetic, and inviting. I especially love the dragonflies. I have dragonflies flying around my neighborhood and backyard all the time, so they seemed like a natural addition.

I also added some watercolor flowers that are more abstract and not too detailed. I love the watering can and wheelbarrow, too. I use those myself almost every day during the spring and summer, so they’re things I really associate with being out in the garden.

And then there’s the picket fence, which I think is kind of classic. I thought it added a nice touch and helped give the whole scene that familiar garden feel.

There are also a few little details to discover—the bird sitting on top of one of the birdhouses, along with the ladybugs and, of course, the dragonflies. Those little touches are very reminiscent of what you might see on a warm spring or summer day.

This is a watercolor painted on fairly heavy watercolor paper.
