When I think about Flag in a Heart, using the American flag, it really takes me back to my childhood and growing up in a smaller town. To me, the flag represented the community connection I felt a part of—whether it was summer carnivals, county fairs with all of the farm animals people were showing, food, rides, fishing, and just everyone coming together to celebrate their community.

There was a real sense of connection and joy that came with those times, and I think that’s what I was trying to capture in this piece.

When I created this design, I paired the flag with a quilt that I have. You’ll see this quilt used quite a bit in my artwork. It’s a quilt my mother made, and I believe most of the patterns in it are from the 60s and 70s. Those patterns are really reminiscent of that time for me, which also brings me back to my childhood.

But I think the quilt represents something more, too. It reminds me of the heart and soul of everyday America. My mom was a creative soul who made some of our clothes and blankets. There was something very personal and meaningful about the things she created for us.

I think that’s what comes to mind when I’m creating this kind of art—the memories, the simple things, and the way we often look back and reminisce about the days of our youth.

For me, Flag in a Heart is really a reflection of those memories and that feeling of community, family, and growing up.
